Forum Rooms

Your forum is organized in to rooms. A room is a collection of threads on a particular topic. Rooms form the backbone of your forum.

As example, go the home page of the Forum-Engine support forum. Each of the links goes to a room on our support forum.

If you had a forum about pets, you might have one room about dogs, another room about cats, and a third room about fish tanks.

Types Of Rooms

Three types of rooms are available, to give you the maximum flexibility in creating the kind of forum experience you want to offer your visitors.

  • Open Rooms: Open rooms are the kind of room your visitors will likely be the most familiar with. In an open room, registered members can add new threads and posts to the forum immediately.

Once a new post has been added to the forum, the post will also be mailed to the moderator for that room, so they can monitor activity. If the moderator wishes, they can delete the new post, either by clicking a link in the notification email, or by clicking a button next to the post on the forum.

  • Moderated Rooms: In a moderated room, new posts are sent to the moderator for review and approval before being added to the forum. The moderator will click a link in the notification email to either approve the post and add it to the forum, or discard the post.

In a moderated room, the moderator has full control over what is published, which can help create more thoughtful, focused, informative discussions.

  • Closed Rooms: In a closed room, only the moderator can add new threads and posts. A closed room is really much like a regular blog or website, except that it is presented within the context of a forum.

Your forum can have any combination of open, moderated and closed rooms. You can change the status of a room at any time.

The purpose of open, moderated and closed rooms is to give you the ability to create the unique environment that is best suited to your goals and visitors.
